Anna Jarvis founded mothers’ day in 1905 after her mother passed away, but in 1920, she started fighting the holiday to bring it down until she died in 1948. WHY?!! Lets go back 96 years ago!
When Anna was celebrating the holiday publicly at the church for the first time in 1908 , many, church members, people and leaders stood against her. For example, the senator at that time, Jacob Gallinger, considered making one day for mothers an insult to mothers, calling it “absolutely absurd” because in his own words “”Every day with me is a mother’s day.”
Through heavy campaigning, she was able to market the holiday nation-wide, until it was printed on a postal stamp and became ultra popular. But soon after, she started to realize that all the companies and business owners who supported her campaign did so to make profits out of the holiday, especially flower companies, and including even religious groups who started to make profits by excessive and unnecessary fundraising. It was no longer about mothers!
By 1920, she realized her mistake, and started a counter-campaign, going as far as begging people not buy gifts on mothers day, but after 28 years of trying, she was not successful, and today, mother’s day is a $20,000,000,000 dollar business just in the USA. Now I won’t say every day is a mother day, because every breath that comes out of you is owed to the woman who without her after Allah, you would not exist today, may Allah help us to truly honour our mothers the way our Prophet peace be upon him taught us to honour them!
